Test Before You Buy™

The Stedman Testing and Toll Processing Facility is the place to test your material in our full size equipment. If it can be crushed, ground, pulverized or mixed, chances are we’ve done it. We have more than 10,000 test reports to help get you to the best solution quickly. To learn more about what to expect from testing, read our article that ran in POWDER BULK ENGINEERING magazine.

Matching Crusher Type to Mineral Hardness and Abrasiveness

The minerals and ores we process most often fall into two practical categories for crusher selection: softer, less abrasive material like alumina hydrate, borax, sodium silicate, and magnesite, and harder, more abrasive material like iron ore, chrome ore, fluorspar ore, and tungsten ore. Softer minerals generally run well through our cage mills and pulverizers, which use selective impact across multiple rows to hit a fine, controlled particle size without excess wear. Harder, more abrasive ores put more stress on wear parts, which is why our horizontal shaft impactors and vertical shaft impactor are built with replaceable wear components suited to sustained abrasive duty. If you're processing a mineral not listed here, from bauxite and feldspar to trona ore and vermiculite ore, we can tell you which crusher type fits based on hardness, moisture content, and your target output size.

Ore & Mineral Crushing Equipment

We manufacture three core equipment types for mineral and ore crushing, each suited to a different combination of material hardness, feed size, and finished product requirement.

  • Horizontal Shaft Impactors for Primary and Secondary Reduction: Our Mega Slam HSI is our horizontal shaft impactor built for high-capacity primary reduction, and our Grand Slam HSI is our secondary impact crusher built to handle a wide range of materials in a smaller footprint. Both use horizontal shaft impact to strike material rather than compress it, which works well across the range of ores and minerals we process, from bauxite to barite ore.
  • Vertical Shaft Impactor for Coarse-to-Fine Crushing: Our V-Slam Impactor VSI handles coarse-to-fine reduction using a vertical shaft design, which gives us a different impact geometry than our horizontal shaft machines. We use the V-Slam when a mineral or ore needs to move from a coarser feed size down to a finer product in fewer stages than a horizontal impactor would require.
  • Cage Mills and Pulverizers for Fine, Controlled Particle Size: Our cage mills and pulverizers use multiple rows of spinning cages to reduce minerals through selective impact, producing a controlled fine particle size on materials like gypsum, talc, and agricultural limestone. We cover the full cage mill lineup, including single-row and multi-row configurations, on our dedicated cage mills and pulverizers page.

Frequently Asked Questions

A horizontal shaft impactor, like our Mega Slam and Grand Slam, strikes material with hammers or blow bars mounted on a horizontally spinning rotor. A vertical shaft impactor, like our V-Slam, uses a vertically spinning rotor and typically handles coarse-to-fine reduction in fewer stages. The right choice depends on your feed size, target output, and how abrasive your ore is, which is why we recommend testing before committing to one over the other.

Moisture content affects how a mineral behaves inside any crusher, and some configurations handle it better than others. Rather than guess based on the mineral name alone, we recommend running your specific material through our Testing and Toll Processing Facility so we can confirm how it performs at the moisture level you're actually working with.

Highly abrasive ores like chrome ore, tungsten ore, and iron ore wear down internal components faster than softer minerals, which affects both crusher choice and wear part replacement frequency. We build our equipment with replaceable wear parts specifically because abrasive ore processing requires periodic component changeout, and we can review your material's abrasiveness during testing to set expectations before you buy.

We list uranium ore among the materials we've processed, and mining operations working with regulated or specialty ores should contact us directly with the specifics of the material and any handling requirements involved. We can tell you whether our standard equipment applies or if your project needs additional configuration.

Reduction ratio depends on the crusher type, the ore's hardness and moisture, and your feed size going in. Our cage mills reach up to a 40:1 reduction ratio on suitable material, while our horizontal and vertical shaft impactors are sized differently depending on primary versus secondary reduction needs. Send us your feed size and target output and we'll tell you what to expect from each equipment type.

Many operations run more than one mineral or ore through the same machine, but abrasiveness and hardness differences between materials affect wear part life and finished product consistency. If you're processing more than one material on the same line, tell us all of them during testing so we can confirm one crusher configuration works across your full material range.
