Herb & Spice Industrial Crushing Equipment

Stedman Machine Company builds industrial crushers for herbs & spices that large-scale processors rely on to hit production targets without cooking off the aroma and essential oil qualities that give spices their value. Whether you need industrial crushers for spices with dense, oily content or industrial crushers for dry, brittle herbs, our cage mills and hammer mills are low-maintenance industrial herb crushing equipment and industrial spice crushing equipment, processing six to seven tons per hour depending on configuration and material.

Cage Mill for Herbs and Spices vs. Hammer Mills for Herbs & Spices: Why Grinding Method Affects Flavor

As industrial spice crushing equipment goes through a grinding cycle, mechanical energy converts to heat, and heat is what drives off the volatile essential oils responsible for a spice's aroma and flavor intensity. The two grinding methods we build, cage mills and hammer mills, generate that heat differently, and the difference matters most on heat-sensitive material.

A cage mill for herbs and spices doesn't rely on screens to control finished particle size. Instead, it uses cage speed and row configuration, and because there's no screen restricting flow, the cage mill generates less heat than alternative equipment. That makes our cage mill line the cooler-running option for heat-sensitive herb and spice processing.

Our hammer mills for herbs & spices, specifically the Full Circle Hammer Mill, run air-swept and cooler than a standard hammer mill, but because they use screens to size the finished product, they still generate more heat than a screenless cage mill grinding the same material. For processors running especially delicate herbs, this is often the deciding factor in which mill we recommend.

Cage Mills for Herbs and Spices: H-Series, F-Series, and Y-Series

If heat sensitivity and flavor retention are the priority, a cage mill for spice processing is typically the better starting point. We build three configurations, each suited to different herb and spice characteristics:

H-Series Cage Mill for High-Volume Herb and Spice Processing

Our H-Series multi-cage mill pulverizes, grinds, crushes, and mixes in a single pass, which suits herb and spice operations that need to combine size reduction with blending. It includes a hydraulically operated, quick-opening retractor for fast access and a reversible rotor assembly that extends wear life on both sides of the rotor.

F-Series Cage Mill for Oily and Sticky Spice Material

Our F-Series Cage Mill has a flared discharge opening built for sticky, high-moisture material, a good fit for oily spices prone to buildup in a standard discharge. Like our other cage mills, it's economical to run since there are no screens to replace, and it offers product gradation flexibility through cage speed changes. An optional integrated air cannon is also available if material buildup becomes a concern during longer runs.

Y-Series Cage Mill for Delicate, Less Abrasive Herb Material

Our Y-Series Cage Mill is a selective, controlled-impact cage mill built for less abrasive material, which makes it well suited to dried herbs and softer spices that don't need the aggressive reduction a harder material would require. It shares the same economical, screenless design as our other cage mills, with product gradation flexibility through cage speed changes and the option to add an integrated air cannon.

Hammer Mills for Herbs & Spices: The Full Circle Hammer Mill

When your target particle size calls for fine, screen-controlled grinding, our Full Circle Hammer Mill is the hammer mill built for herbs and spices that need a finer, more consistent finished product than a standard hammer mill delivers. Its air-swept design, large screen area, customizable screens and hammers, and easy-access screen carriage mean fast screen changes when your material or particle size target changes, so hammer mills for spices and hammer mills for herbs don't sit down long between runs. We cover this hammer mill in more detail on our dedicated Full Circle Hammer Mill page.

Testing Your Herb or Spice Material Before You Commit to Equipment

Because herbs and spices vary widely in moisture, oil content, and hardness, even within the same crop from one harvest to the next, we recommend running your material through our Testing and Toll Processing Facility before committing to a cage mill or hammer mill. We test on full-size equipment, not lab-scale models, and we've generated more than 10,000 test reports across the materials we process, including herbs and spices. We published our testing process in Powder Bulk Engineering magazine so you know what to expect before sending material. Once your equipment is running, our 24-hour parts and service department and on-hand wear parts inventory keep your line moving if you need a repair.

Test Before You Buy™

The Stedman Testing and Toll Processing Facility is the place to test your material in our full size equipment. If it can be crushed, ground, pulverized or mixed, chances are we’ve done it. We have more than 10,000 test reports to help get you to the best solution quickly. To learn more about what to expect from testing, read our article that ran in POWDER BULK ENGINEERING magazine.

Who Uses Our Industrial Crushers for Herbs & Spices

Processors reach for a cage mill or hammer mill for herbs and spices at different points in the production line, and the right fit depends on what's coming in and what needs to go out the other side.

  • Spice blend and seasoning manufacturers running continuous production lines typically need industrial spice crushing equipment that holds a consistent particle size across long runs without frequent screen changes, which is where our cage mills, running screenless, tend to fit best.
  • Botanical and herbal extract processors working with dried leafy material that's sensitive to heat exposure often start with our Y-Series cage mill, since it's built for less abrasive material and keeps grind temperatures down during the pass that precedes extraction.
  • Whole spice and seed processors handling harder, denser material like peppercorns, cinnamon, or seed pods frequently need the reduction ratio our H-Series or F-Series cage mills deliver, particularly when the end product needs to move from whole or cracked material down to a fine, uniform powder.
  • Facilities standardizing on a single finished mesh size across multiple herb and spice SKUs often lean toward our Full Circle Hammer Mill, since its customizable screens and hammers let one machine hit a tight, repeatable particle size spec without swapping equipment between runs.

Across all four of these, the same testing principle applies: your material's moisture content, oil content, and hardness determine which cage mill or hammer mill configuration actually performs the way you need it to in production, not just on paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

A cage mill for herbs and spices uses spinning cage rows and pin impact rather than screens to control particle size, which generates less heat during grinding. Our hammer mills for herbs & spices, specifically the Full Circle Hammer Mill, use screens and an air-swept design to reach a fine, consistent particle size, and while they run cooler than a standard hammer mill, they still generate more heat than a screenless cage mill grinding the same material. Which one we recommend depends on your material's heat sensitivity and target particle size.

Heat is the main driver of essential oil loss, and grinding method affects how much heat gets generated. Our cage mills don't use screens, so they generate less heat than hammer mills that rely on screens to size the finished product. For heat-sensitive material, this is often the deciding factor in which industrial crusher we recommend.

Our Full Circle Hammer Mill is configured with customizable screens and hammers specifically for herb and spice material, not just general-purpose grinding. That configurability is what lets the same hammer mill handle both hammer mills for herbs and hammer mills for spices without needing separate machines for each.

Tell us your starting material size and target finished particle size, and we can confirm whether one of our cage mills or hammer mills handles it in a single pass or whether a staged approach makes more sense.

Contact us with your specific sanitation and construction requirements. We can tell you which cage mill or hammer mill configuration and material options fit your facility's food safety and cleaning protocols.

The Full Circle Hammer Mill is built with an easy access screen carriage specifically to make screen changes fast, with customizable screens and hammers so you can adjust to a new material or target particle size without a different machine. Actual changeover time depends on your configuration, which we can walk through during quoting.

Material hardness and density determine which cage mill configuration works best. Our Y-Series is built for less abrasive material like dried herbs, while denser or harder spices may need our H-Series or F-Series. If you're processing a range of materials, tell us the full range during testing so we can confirm one cage mill handles it or whether you need separate equipment.
